I know the end of summer can be depressing for some, but I must admit, October is one of my favourite months of the year. From the chill in the air, the changing colours of leaves and Pumpkin Spice Lattes at Starbucks, what’s not to love?!
You see, growing up in Florida, I never really got to see or appreciate the seasons. It went from really hot, to really REALLY hot, to light coat weather and around again. Oh with a lot of humidity and bad-hair days thrown in. It’s been 11 years now, but I still love it when October hits and I can pull out my wooly jumpers, pop on a scarf and begin dreaming of the C-word (only xx days, but I won’t say it yet!).
I also adore Autumn clothing. Nothing beats a cosy cashmere jumper and boots. I’m a big fan of the seasonal clothing change over twice a year – so when I pull out those boxes of winter wear it’s like I’m opening a whole new wardrobe. And the somewhat wacky UK weather this time of year means that layering is absolutely essential. So I can still wear my fave summer tops then throw on a jacket or blazer and a chic scarf and have an infinite amount of new wardrobe combinations!
And it means you can officially go shopping for new season clothing – despite the fact I’ve seen wool in the shops since July, it is now officially acceptable to invest in a new coat.
Over the past couple years I’ve been very tactical in my winter coat purchases. Two years ago I invested in a simple classic black wool number from & Other Stories and last year it was a navy coat with detachable fur collar from Whistles. With a dry clean and quick underarm de-booble both coats look nearly new!
So since I have the coat basics covered, this year I’m ready for a bit more fun. And 2015 is definitely the year to do it! There are so many lovely coats out there with character… yes some are a bit trendy but I expect you’ll be able to get a couple season’s wear out of them and then probably stash them before they make the fashion cycle rounds again in a few years time.
Here’s my round-up of the best coats with character for this season…
Leopard print is hot again this season - in fact it never seems to go out of style! I love this grey based coat as it will work with just about any colour underneath it. It will look equally amazing with jeans and boots as it will with a chic dress and office wear.
Checks are another trend that have been around for ages but are back in full force this season. These styles are all over the shops and are a great way to liven up a classic outfit. I tried this M&S one on yesterday and adored the fabric - it's a cosy-blend and looks quite textured, but it's not - so you get the effect without the volume. It is quite slim fitting though, so look at other options if you're quite hippy like me (I also like this Linea one, minus the big plastic buttons which can easily be swapped for a tortoiseshell or plaited leather).
If like me you have the basic coat colours covered, go for something bright and bold. Lipstick red is THE colour of the season and it will instantly transform any wardrobe., especially a conservative work wardrobe. If you're weary be sure to choose a plain simple style with simple sleek lines - it's an instant updater!
If colour is not your thing you can play it safe with a monochromatic style - but choose an interesting one. Again it will add a bit of interest to an otherwise simple outfit. This black and white H&M coat is super fun but will look fab layered over any colour (just be weary of print mixing!). If you're outfit is in a neutral palette, add a colourful handbag or shoes - you'll look super fashionable with very little effort.
I'm a huge fan of ombre - from my hair colour to my notepads, I just can't get enough - and coats are no exception! I particularly adore these two. Sure they won't go with everything in my wardrobe, but I know that when I put them on, I'll feel special. They are both so unique yet so overwhelmingly simple. You could easily throw your hair up, put on jeans and a T-shirt then grab one of these and still look stylish and considered. Which colour do you prefer? I think I'm leaning towards the grey/maroon one!
Sometimes you just need to make a statement. This coat will definitely do that. I love the black curly fur on the collar - but if you're not so keen, fret not, it's detachable. Yes there is a lot going on here, but that's the point. The colours in this coat are phenomenal - the black background keeps it grounded but the floral pattern manages to incorporate every single colour you might want to wear in Autumn - making it EXTREMELY wearable with just about anything.
