Trend to Try: The Knot Top

I spend a lot of time showing my styling clients simple ways to update the clothes that they already own. It’s amazing how I simple tuck here or fold there can completely transform an item of clothing.

One of my favourite trends at the moment is the knotted shirt. It works for most ages and body shapes and will give a new stylish lease of life to tops that have been sitting in your wardrobe but don’t work because they might be a bit too big, baggy or just plain boring.

No matter your age, there’s a way to try it out for yourself…

In your 20’s…

If you’ve got it, flaunt it. This is a great style for the young and fashionably fearless.
Try knotting a simple t-shirt or lightweight button-down and wear with funky printed skirt, a short flippy skirt or a pair of shorts this summer

In your 30’s…

If you're in your thirties, chances are you have a denim shirt in your closet (if not, you should!). Here’s a new way to wear it! Pair it with a fun printed or textured skirt or wear it slightly open and tied over a dress (perfect for an in-between season/English summer jacket).

In your 40’s…

For a smart look, try knotting a classic white shirt and wearing with a full midi or knee length skirt. It’s a great look for the office or weekends alike.

For a more casual look, go for a stripy shirt over a denim skirt or knot a baggy t-shirt over a simple casual skirt.

In your 50’s+…

Truth be told, I love this first look and would probably wear it myself (minus the midriff)! But it’s great for women 50+ too. Go with a shirt in a flowy fabric, like silk, then pair with a pair of tailored or wide legged trousers. So elegant and chic!

Fashion-friendly for all ages… Pair a shirt with jeans

This look is super simple and effortless. If you want to hide your belly, tie your top a bit lower for fuller coverage (a loose shirt works best). However if you’ve got a nice toned tummy, tie it at your midriff and show a bit of skin!

Perfect for mums-to-be…

I’m rocking this look A LOT at the moment! I love tying a tee over a maxi skirt or even a dress. It’s a great way to show off your bump as well as adapt clothes that you already wear so you can get more looks from them (and not spend a fortune on maternity styles!).

The thing to do here is experiment. Just because I've mentioned specific looks for different ages, they are all so versatile and can be tailored and worn whatever age you are. Try different t-shirts and button downs, over different bottoms and see what works best for you. If you find a style you love, I'd love to see it over on my Lolo Lovett Style Facebook page
