Ready, Set, Show Off Those Shoulders!

While they don’t immediately scream sexy, there is something about shoulders that every woman can appreciate. Let’s think about this – for starters, shoulders don’t age. No sagging, no wrinkling (thanks gravity), and because they are one of the first parts of your body to catch the sun, any age spots are often camouflaged.

Another point – the oversized sweatshirt, probably one of the LEAST sexy or appealing items of clothing in your wardrobe. But you know that moment when it casually falls to one side, exposing a shoulder and you hesitate to adjust it because in your head you’re rocking an uber sexy Kelly Kapowski-esque look? Yeah that moment. You think you’re sexy, heck you KNOW your sexy and 9/10 times you are.

The fact is, the shoulder is one of the most overlooked body parts. Yes it's made its rounds in the cyclical fashion world (a few of my favourite off-the-shoulder moments below!) but it's been quite a few years since it's been considered 'in' again. Thankfully its become THE body part of the moment for the Spring season. Expect to see shoulder bearing tops, dresses and jumpsuits everywhere.

Thankfully this trend has been translated from the catwalk to the high street with such aplomb that nearly everyone regardless of age and size can wear it (disclaimer: sorry broad shoulders girls, this is one trend to steer clear of unless you’re going for the linebacker look).

Here’s three effortless ways to show off your own shoulders:

DAYTIME STYLE

This is the easiest and most common way to rock the look. Just pair a simple off the shoulder or cold shoulder top (that's the one with the cut outs like on the pic above left) with your favourite skinnies. It's a simple look so add interest with accessories. Right now I'm wearing mine with my embellished flats and come summer it will be all about the colourblock sandals. Bonus points for adding a funky handbag to the mix.

FOR WORK OR PLAY

Of course this look won't work in all office environments and is probably not appropriate for big meetings but I think in the height of summer you'll be able to get away with it! It's also a great out for brunch with the girls or lunch with the in-laws. It's smart yet stylish and sophisticated - and looks like you've made loads of effort. Keep it chic with simple accessories.

TAKE IT UP A NOTCH

The evening is really a great time for shoulders to shine. Pear shaped and hourglass figures will look fab in an 0ff-the-shoulder / full skirt combo as the broad line of the top perfectly balances the fullness of the skirt. Apple shapes with a fuller middle section can use the top to draw attention away from their tummies - the black lace one is a perfect example. Pair with smart trousers. Rich fabrics like velvet and striking details (like lace and ruffles) are a great way to up the sexiness of the look.

For Busty Babes

Yes you'll need to wear a strapless bar (please NEVER wear clear bra straps!) so if you've got sizeable assets you may think this trend is not for you. Fear not - you can still show off your shoulders AND wear a bra - just go for a 'cold shoulder' style the has cutouts rather than the full effect. Also choose a shirt in a medium to heavy structured fabric - so it won't get lost 'in the valley'.

For Long-waisted Lassies

Tuck that top in. You can also wear your top and trousers in contrasting colours to break it up a bit. If you're wearing an off-the-shoulder dress or jumpsuit, try adding a colourful belt to break things up and emphasise your waist.

For Short-waisted Stunners

Keep it long! Go for a tunic-style top, untucked or a dress - either knee length or maxi style will look best. Avoid adding a contrasting belt. If you need one, choose one in the same colour.

For the Fearless Fashionistas

So you've been rocking this look for awhile have you? If you're an early adopter then try taking it up a notch and combining with another Spring 2016 trend - the bell sleeve. Or try Ellery's dramatic ruffle sleeves - they're the stuff dreams are made of.
