Style How To... Wear Trainers

Now that you’ve been inspired and found your favourite pair of kicks, how do you actually wear them? Maybe that’s a silly question but I want to be sure that your trainers are reaching their FULL potential and properly earning their place in your wardrobe.

1) Keep it classic with a t-shirt and jeans

But add an edge, obviously. My favourite jeans with trainers are ankle grazers. This will help avoid the awkward bunched up hem you often get, plus they show off those sexy ankles.

If you’ve got a thicker ankle, there’s no need to hide it, just choose a shoe with a chunky sole to add balance.

Or for a different look - try trousers!

2) With a dress

Now this is probably a bit controversial to some of you, but why not give it a try. It will give those dresses in your wardrobe a new lease of life!

I’m a firm believer in wearing what you own and not saving anything ‘for best’. So this is a perfect way to dress down that maxi you bought last summer. Or wear with a skater dress for a girl about town style.

3) Skirt and jumper

Another style that might be slightly out of your comfort zone but once you’ve embraced it, there’s no turning back.

This is my style du jour for meetings and maintaining comfort whilst also looking somewhat considered and fashionable.

I’ve found recently a lot of my clients don’t own many skirts – if this is you, you can get the same look by throwing a jumper over a dress.

4) Just add colour, texture, fabulousness

If you’re stuck wearing the same old ‘uniform’ every day, like jeans and a jumper, trainers are a great way to add interest to your outfit with no extra effort.

My favourite trainers ‘of interest’ are my Leopard-print Copelands by Air & Grace. They instantly make the most basic of outfits look more stylish and I receive so many compliments when I wear them.

5) Dress down your best Items of clothing

I already touched on this by pairing trainers with a dress, but you don’t need to stop there! Take anything you own that might be considered a bit ‘too much’ for day time, add trainers et voila – you’ve got a new look!

@rockmystyle via Pinterest

Black trainers look amazing with leather (faux or real) leggings and a chunky trainer with a wide legged trouser is top trend for 2018. Want to get more out of that sequin skirt or dress you bought for the holiday party four years ago? Just add trainers.

STYLIST TIP:

You can wear a simple t-shirt or jumper, your favourite jeans, trainers and then top it off with the coat. This also works with dresses, skirts, leather leggings, etc, you get the picture. It will instantly up the fashion factor to ANY outfit.

All images via Pinterest

Just make sure the hem length is different between the two in order to create length and elongate your silhouette.

My only trainer NO-NO: trainers with tights

… it just doesn’t work. The eye is drawn to the shoe and legs look weird.

All images via Pinterest

If you absolutely must, then choose a tight with a low opacity - avoid think black tights at all costs.

The ONLY exception is if you have simple streamlined black trainers with tights. It just about works for a sport luxe feel. But anything lighter in colour or that stands out will just make your silhouette look rather odd!

Where to Buy the Best Trainers

After reading Part One of my trainers special series, are you feeling inspired? I hope so! Now, that you’re ready to rock those kicks, here’s a few of my favourite brands to buy.

I do think when it comes to trainers, you get what you pay for. A good pair will last you for ages if you look after them, so they are worth investing in. If you can’t afford leather, go for canvas but avoid plastics and synthetics wherever possible (they won’t last, aren’t made well and will make your feet stink!).

1) Golden Goose Deluxe Brand

These are quickly becoming my most favourite trainers ever. It’s taken me nearly two years to commit to the price tag, but I am so glad I did (note: I did buy mine in the sale and Net-a-Porter  and MyTheresa.com still have several styles half off, hurry!). They are beautifuly made and the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned.

A nappy bag is the perfect accessory for my GGDB trainers

GGDB has been around since 2000, but has recently become the fashion bloggers sneaker of choice. I love that they come in such a huge selection of fabrics, colours and textures. Plus their signature worn-in look means a scuff here or there only adds to their charm.

2) Air & Grace

If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen me wearing my Leopard print Copelands A LOT. I wore them in NYC last month where we walked about 20 miles over the course of three days – and I didn’t say ‘my feet hurt’ once!

I love clashing my leopard Copelands with a garish print

These lovely shoes are designed in London and not only are they beautiful, they have musculoskeletal benefits as well. The memory foam layers hidden in the soul work to align your spine correctly – great if you suffer from lower back pain!

3) Reebok

Of the traditional athletics brands, Reebok is my favourite. They aren’t as popular as Adidas or Nike these days but you know it’s a brand you can trust for comfort.

Black trainers are fab to wear with a skirt or dress - these Reebok classics go with everything!

Their signature retro style never goes out of fashion. I also love how their standard sole is thinner at the toe with a bit of lift in the heel. Not only does this work to stabilise the heel, it’s very flattering for curvy figures.

4) New Look

If you want to ease yourself into trainers slowly, New Look is the perfect place to shop. You can often find designers dupes at a fraction of the price – including these glitter striped ones that bare a strong resemblance to the Air & Grace classic Copelands!

These Copeland-look-a-likes are on sale for £18 at ASOS (although if you love them, I strongly suggest going for the real thing!)

My favourite style from New Look are the slip-ons. They are great if you’re running after children and need to put on /take-off shoes quickly. Plus they go up to a size 9 and most styles can be found in wider width as well.

Celestial slip-ons in velvet... so many trends in one shoe!

5) Shoeaholics

This isn’t a brand but a website. If you haven’t heard of it before, you’re welcome (or I apologise, depends on how you look at it!).

The site stocks popular brands such as Kurt Geiger, Carvela and Gola at a fraction of a price. And I’m not talking a few quid off – sometimes you can get up to 90% off! PLUS new customers get an extra 20% off when they sign up to emails.

I picked up these Carvela sandals for £9 last year - I wore them so much last summer, I wish I had bought two pairs!

The styles are usually a season or two old but if you love it, who cares. It’s also a great place for trendy shoes you liked but weren’t sure about at full price. The site is a bit of mish-mash of leftover stock so shop by your shoe size to slim down the selection and curb disappointment.

I ❤︎ Trainers - part one, inspiration

It’s a beautiful thing when fashion and function come together. Case in point - trainers. I bloody love them.

They’re probably the item of clothing I’ve bought the most since my son was born. You know, since long gone are the days of business meetings, fancy lunches and a quick pint after work. Now I look for something easy to slide in and out of at soft play, should I have to run into the ball pit at a seconds notice.

My trainer collection. Please tell me I'm not alone in my obsession?! I think this is fairly reasonable...

In my twenties I was a heels girl, all the way. At work, the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet was full of them. Should I need a classic black stiletto at a moment’s notice? No problem. But now, well I can’t even remember the last time I wore a proper heel!

I do think trainers have a come a long way in the past few years. It’s now not only acceptable to wear them with a dress, it’s considered fashionable (and a look I totally adore and wear whenever possible).

I loved dressing down this Hush maxi with my favourite Air & Grace Copeland trainers.

I think I’ve always been a trainers girl at heart, it’s just taken the shoe industry a while to produce shoes that are beautiful and functional. And now, I’m obsessed.

My current count is 13 pairs of 'fashion' trainers, three pairs of exercise trainers and a couple pairs that should be permanently retired but instead have been demoted to ‘garden shoes’ (note, I’ve probably been in our garden err, ten whole times in the three years that we’ve lived in our current house).

Add trainers and a denim jacket to any dress to make it more wearable for daytime. Statement necklace optional.

Are you convinced? Or are you still clinging onto your ballet flats and UGGS? Let them go ladies! Stylist’s orders! I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Here’s some style inspiration from a few of my favourite bloggers to get the inspirational outfit juices flowing…

Zoë de Pass from Dress Like a Mum is also a big fan of the Air & Grace Copelands - in fact she designed her own line for them (living the dream!)! She's a great person to follow for making quirky fashionable items more wearable - whether you're a mum or not.

Who knew a satin skirt would work so well with trainers and a jumper? @dresslikeamum

Zoë dress down a tea dress with a simple pair of white sneakers.

Kat Farmer of Does My Bum Look 40 is a big advocate of trainers. I've lost count of how many pairs of Golden Goose Deluxe Brands she must own. Her signature style? Well-worn trainers with a maxi dress and biker jacket. It works so well!

So simple yet so stylish @doesmybumlook40

A duster coat dresses up a simple t-shirt and trainers combination. Culottes lend the outfit a trendy edge but jeans would work just as well if you're not as brave!

Maxi skirt, slogan tee, trainers and biker jacket are always a winning style formula

Fran Bacon of The Fashion Lift loves to dress down her best items with a pair of comfortable trainers. Follow her for great school run style!

Not sure how to dress down your leather leggings? White trainers do the trick! @thefashion_lift

Print mixing done right! I love Fran's no nonsense easy to wear approach to fashion

Erica Davies of The Edited NEVER (well, hardly ever) wears jeans. She's a great one to follow if you want simple styles that do not include denim. She does a great job of pairing trainers with a culotte or wide legged trousers - so chic!

Simple neutral colours a pair of Adidas give off a Parisian feel. @erica_davies

How to dress up all black? Tonal pinks. I love these pale pink kicks

2018 The Year of Me

It’s that time of year again – where blogs are awash with posts about resolutions or anti resolutions or whatever ways you/they plan on making 2018 the best year ever.

2018 the year of me. And palm print. I bloody love a palm print.

Well my friends, I’m skeptical. I’ve done this post before. Not last year because I was busy looking after a newborn and all that, but I did the year before. This one is a whole week earlier than that one was – but who really cares? I’ve not written a blog post in nearly three months, did you notice? Did you miss it?

So why do it? I think every blogger has dissected that question at some point in their blogging career.

I do it for me. I’d like to blog more. I’m going to try to. But if I don’t, I’m not going to give myself a hard time or apologise for it anymore.

I want that attitude to cover anything that is not a do or die priority. And even then, we can only do so much. So let’s be kinder to ourselves in the meantime, k?

The last half a decade or so we’ve become so dependent on social media and viewing other peoples’ happiness and perfectly photographed and curated lives. We’ve coined terms like FOMO and YOLO and keeping up with the Joneses has never been so outwardly and incessantly shoved in our faces. Let’s just turn it off?

I’ll be the first to admit I get sucked into the rabbit-hole of online scrolling. Last night I decided I’d watch an episode of Grey’s Anatomy then read for 15 minutes before going to bed. Then I started scrolling the ‘gram and before I knew it an hour had passed. So long Grey’s. I thought ok just another minute then I’ll go read in bed. Before I knew it, I’d wasted TWO HOURS total. Doing what? God knows!

So my one and only goal for this year is to take back MY TIME. I enjoy reading. I enjoy exercising. I enjoy writing. But I often don’t because I don’t ‘have enough time’… yet I can tell you all about the wallpaper that Fran Bacon has in her down stairs loo and which maxi dress is top of Kat Farmer’s wish list. I love you ladies, but it must stop. It doesn’t make me happy. It doesn’t do anything for me at all.

So this year is the year of ME. That age-old saying of putting on your own oxygen mask first before helping others has never been truer. We need to take better care of ourselves. We must be selfish. I’m sure I’ll still waste some time doing the Insta scroll but I’m going to be more mindful of letting it waste my time or affect me and my mindset.

Mindful. Selfish. Unapologetic. Kind to self. That’s what I’m making this year all about. No, I don’t want 2018 to be the best year EVER. I want to learn from my past, look forward to what the future and perhaps it will be the best year yet.

Say no to UGGs

Hello Autumn! This is one season I always welcome with open arms. I love everything about it – the crisp cool weather, pumpkin spice lattes, the changing of the leaves. And let’s not forget fall fashion. I dream of cashmere jumpers, big wooly scarves and fur-lined boots.

8fff176eb22d104c598aefe1e533a170.jpg

It brings me such joy when the temperatures drop and it’s time to break out the boots. But please, whatever you do, do not reach for the UGGs. It seems everyone owns them despite knowing they shouldn’t.

I’m not hating on the brand as a whole, just the classic style that takes your legs from fab to stunted tree stumps in mere seconds. It doesn’t matter if they are just for the school run or around the house. If a shoe can make Kate Moss look dumpy, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Kate-Moss-Uggs.jpg

You can be comfortable without having to commit one of fashion’s biggest faux pas. Here are my top picks for keeping comfortable without sacrificing your style.

These Seven Boot Lane Kylie boots are my top pick. I actually bought these and it broke my heart to return them, but they made my feet look really big. Note: my feet ARE really big, I wear a UK size 8. So I’d say these are perfect for those a size 6 and under, sadly. Plus Seven Boot Lane have very kindly given me a special discount offer to share – enter LOLO15 at checkout and you’ll get 15% off (you can use it on ANY new season style until 29/10/17)!

If you’re a converse girl, then these Chuck Taylor high tops are perfect. They are classically cool and will never go out of style. They come in grey too!

Converse Chuck Taylor high tops, ASOS, £70

These are the only actual UGGs on my list. They have all the cosiness with none of the ugliness! Super cute and versatile – they are on my wish list after having to return the Kylies.

For a more traditional boot style these Boden beauties tick all the boxes. They come in three different colours but my fave is the grey with a contrasting yellow zip pull. The sheepskin lining looks oh so soft!

The bargain beauties are from Tesco and a mere £28! They come in brown and black and are water resistant.

If you’re usually just housebound in your UGGs, these slippers are a great alternative. They actually looking very similar to the branded version but are much more affordable! I’m actually on my own second pair after I wore out the first – they are sooo comfy!

What do you think, will you swap your UGGs for something more stylish this season? Or can you not live without them?

Don't forget you can save 15% off ANY pair of shoes or boots at Seven Boot Lane by clicking the link and entering LOLO15 at check out until 29/10/17. I'm tempted to order another pair myself!
